The Pharmacy as a Discipline: A Homogenous Mixture of Science and Art

Pharmacy to the ordinary lay person may not seem fulfilling and promising, and in fact may even connote a negative view. To the Filipino people, pharmacist are "glorified salespeople" thinking that it does not require a 4-year BS degree to work in the exciting and varied practice of Pharmacy. The public's view of a pharmacist is a lowly profession who count pills in the counter, transacts in the cash registry and dispenses drugs, a job that does not require intellectual thinking to begin with. A job that could be done by any body trained in the corners of a drugstore (not necessarily a pharmacist) or even worse by an artificial intelligence such as advance dispensing machines. But have you been informed that there is something more to than just dispensing? You may be surprised to know that a pharmacist can already administer vaccine  and/or participate in immunization programs, family planning activities, smoking cessation program, patient drug counselling and many m...

Negative Emotions Pulling You Back

Your heart beats like a wild horse on a race, the spiral of negative thoughts running uncontrollably, the pressure in your chest tingling and burning in sensation. That's how you felt while in your bed, in your office, or in the train station while going to work. You recognize that it isn't heart attack or stroke to begin with; at last you become familiar with anxiety and panic attacks coming down again unexpectedly. When the trauma of your past and guilt overthrows the positives, you become powerless, giving up all else to the dark sucker of energy and joy. That isn't a good thing but you can't do anything to even ease up somehow. You want to run, paralyzed in your comfort zone, too afraid to try out, and settle to confining yourself in a box of hopelessness, reaping away your strength and even your self-esteem. Again, this isn't a good thing. It never was, never is and never will. You are obsessed of reaching a goal and desire in the fastest possible time...

Five Reasons to Love Cycling

Since last year when I bought my own bicycle, I began loving the game. It has brought me fun and excitement like never before. I was depressed, cycling was my drug; I was cynical, cycling gave me hope; I was boring, cycling made me better; I was lonely, cycling helped me forget. This activity has made me a different person, and I love the change it gave me. So what exactly does biking do? Here are my lists on top five. #5. Cycling brings you to the most unexpected places. I am not an adventurous type of person; I wasn’t so appreciative of nature and sceneries. But after engaging into cycling, my perspective changed. I started to notice the little details around me: the blueness of the sky, the greenness of trees and rice plantations, the freshness of the air, the wideness of the highways I traverse, the roughness of the road, the beauty of the places I never have seen. Traveling into places I’ve never been has brought me euphoria and calmness. It’s a good way to relax and enjoy. ...

Why Teach?

I graduated in a Pharmacy school and decided to teach. I am currently an Assistant Instructor where most of my roles include motivating students to be engage in the learning process. I teach Pharmacy courses to aspiring pharmacist—which is a noble thing to do minus the meager salary (relative to government employees such as Elem or High School teachers). Teaching is one of those atypical jobs. It is not a regular 8 to 5 work. You won’t find yourself confine in an office space doing clerical work alone but rather more complex than that. After tiring yourself in the four walls of the classroom, you still have to extend your work even at home. You have papers to check, lessons to prepare, readings to make, presentations to beat, exams and quizzes to construct, professional development to attend, regular meetings and school functions to engage and a whole lot more. Teaching is not only teaching. You don’t end up talking on stage alone. Instead you become a manager, counsellor, fat...

Unofficially Heartbroken, Confused and Waiting

I have suffered enough heart breaks despite not having any relationship with someone. I have been single all my life for around 26 years of existence. I do not have a good concept on what love really feels. I never had any experience of intimate contact and constant communication with someone. I am isolated, loss and barred. When I was 8 I have had so many crushes; immature and unsolicited. It was a childhood memory that is treasured, nonetheless forgotten. It was in my college years when I started feeling a little uncomfortable. I was confused and loss again, trying to fit in with the mainstream. Society has its own way of punishing minority groups, even labeling absurd things that ought not to be. I felt alienated and depressed, unable to express how truly I feel. Imagine having none on your family to back you up, with close to none friends as source of encouragement. Crazy as it felt. There was this special girl in my Pharmacy schooling. She was a shifter from another cours...

An Agent of Change; God is Watching Infinitely

People are unique given their individual experience, hereditary material, trait and talent. Each has its own strength and imperfection. Nobody can do all things by himself at all cost. We are interdependent to one another. Given our freedom and rights, we are autonomous but the irony remain-- we need one another to advance. Progress has been associated with teamwork and the ability to help one another for a common target. Being able to connect and cooperate then is a power that each of us has to learn. We live in an ever-increasing complex world where our needs and wants have revolutionized to a great extent. We have created solutions to problems but have created problems as by-products. Take for instance, robotics and artificial intelligence. AIs are more efficient and less emotional making production line skyrocket to a large degree. It has intensified the amount of products produced in a single manufacture. It has made safer workplace and eased the burden of men. But on the one...

Millennial Opinion: Duterte is the best Philippine President

I could not agree more with the fact that we have in our generation the best president to ever live in our country. A person, although imperfect, has done countless glories for the country. A strong leader who is firm on his principles; a fighter who defends what may not be necessarily acceptable to the crowd yet essential for nation's growth. I have come to love the presidential style of Mr. Duterte. In fact, I consider myself lucky for living in today's generation-- for witnessing how he handles the issues our "Inang Bayan" faces.  His zero-tolerance for corruption, drugs and criminality is truly admirable. He is a just individual who lives within us, common Filipinos. He rubs shoulder with the common citizen, dines with his police officers, and even drive in motorcycle himself to check whether the streets are clean. He has made radical changes for our country; changes that are worth more than the previous' administration. He has helped poor students like u...

BS Pharmacy for K-12 Potential Pharmacist, Philippines

Obtaining a Pharmacy degree is not as easy as being handed with the diploma. Just like any other professional career, it is worked out-- not too simply though. Becoming a pharmacist is not as easy as what you may think or expect it to be. In fact, it has so many complicated course outcomes to meet. The academic standard is surprisingly difficult but definitely rewarding to some degree. If you want to become one of the best in the profession, you should take the program in a top school with a name. The roster of faculty and the select students will challenge you to become thee best in the field. Yes, it is true that learning in the end will depend on the student but a big motivational factor may come from external factors such as faculty, environment, facilities, classmates and the like.   Pharmacy practice in the Philippines will ultimately expand to include administration of vaccine, participation in smoking cessation program, promotion of rational use of drugs, public he...

The Professional Journey of the Filipino Pharmacist

No curricular offering is easy; you have to work out with much effort to obtain that diploma. The BS Pharmacy program is not an exemption to this rule. With the rigors of the course to undertake, voluminous information to know, and chemistry skills to acquire, BS Pharmacy, undoubtedly is a difficult pathway. You need much time to study especially in the third and last year of the program-- a lot of exams to pass, quizzes to hurdle, projects to finish and courage to walk through. Let’s take a closer look of how it feels to be in enrolled in the program. Take note that we are following the curriculum of today, which is same through with our curriculum way back in SY 2008-2009. Also there may be variations of the basic and professional courses to take in terms of course title and number of units, as per discretion of the school. Nevertheless, basic requirements set by CHED is similar all throughout, hence a standardized unified program is expected. In your first year, general educati...

For Greater Glory

The skies open in harmony Wind blows in varying dimensions Fire bellows with extreme fury He stands barefoot in faith He walks in deep exasperation Thinking of nothing but hope With the butterflies in sight A little prayer as his guide The road is packed with wild Crashed  by severe impact  He stood up but fall in trap Darkness came; thunders slapped Unfree for decade and a half He breathes waves in his chest Miracle stood his time Never unfazed through and through He took the step on Towards his bright sun Happiness sets in forever Sacrificed now, reward later

The Internal Struggle

Most of the time our internal processing units are intricately bizarre. We usually think of ourselves as a rational being, able to think logically in a clear manner; but all too often without our consciousness, our judgment is clouded by emotions and past experiences. We relate to other people in a certain way, we make friends with people similar to us, and we are too comfortable within our sphere of comfort. Going beyond is a mountain to climb, a typhoon to beat, an ocean to sail.  Good for those people who were raise in a supporting family, a nurturing school, a caring teacher, and a privilege community. For they are not impaired socially and are ahead in the socioeconomic strata of influence. For people growing up in a disadvantage sector, where conflicts are the norm, hunger is common and apathy as the status quo, internal conflict is a major challenge. All too often we are self-centered lacking the ability to put ourselves on someone's shoes. In the process, we don't rec...

My Desire to be a Doctor: A Personal Story

The door opened and I heard my name crisply called. Nervously, trying to control my emotions, I entered with courage and confidence. The interviewer began to assess me as soon as I enter the cold room, looking for some cues and deciding whether I fit in or not at all. I smiled, gently and intensely. "Please have a seat", he said in a low, deep voice. My heart sank in palpitations, to which I cried for God's help in this unearthly hour. I mustered the courage and eventually relaxed. I thought of good memories and happy times to distract me from this creepy feeling. In that very instant, God responded and heed my requests keeping me calmer. "Tell me something about your family", was his first question. The emotion quickly flooded my heart, a heavy uncomfortable feeling. To which I honestly responded, " I grew up in a broken family under poverty. I am the eldest of four children, in which the pressure to provide and pursue my dreams, is a major challenge. My...

The Tragic Loss of Jay

He was gone like a thief of the night; leaving his family in complete jeopardy. He said no goodbyes and left without warnings. In the silence of the blue sky, he joined the waves of the river. His soul sank in the strong current, wave after wave. He struggled to fulfill his dreams, but nature’s power is way greater than his. As might as he could he tried, until finally he succumbed to rest his weary soul. In a moment he thought of his family, of the beautiful memories, of his lost dream, of the love he received and given, of how he will be remembered. His tears under water, he cried for help, desperate for another chance. But he felt it was time; his time commenced. Who is he to question what is prepared for him in HIS eternal love? In a snap, the river consumed him until his body floated with the angels. He heard trumpets, saw dancing unicorns and felt the warm welcome.  He was now in another world—all whites, all pure, all peaceful. On earth, though, he saw his body in a b...

Tips for Depressed, Down People

At some point in our life, we have felt alone. There are times when all we want to do is Give up, Quit the fight and Stay quiet. But would that be too selfish? It surely is. Instead of wallowing in deep self-pity and feeling down and depress, there's much you can do. Here are some tips to do: 1. Pursue your Passion. Revisit what it is that you want in life. Teach the kids, educate young minds, do artistic craft, dance, sing and laugh. Whatever it is that make you happy, find time to do it. It doesn't matter that you are far from perfect execution, for as long as you love doing it.  2. Surround yourself with Positive people. You may have been driving away good and close friends from your circle. You fought with your parents or family members. Go back to their arms, you certainly need a hug from family and friends. If they are your real family and friends, they would be willing to understand your pain and circumstances. Nothing is more comforting than being with the peop...
