Obtaining a Pharmacy degree is not as easy as being handed with the diploma. Just like any other professional career, it is worked out-- not too simply though. Becoming a pharmacist is not as easy as what you may think or expect it to be. In fact, it has so many complicated course outcomes to meet. The academic standard is surprisingly difficult but definitely rewarding to some degree.
If you want to become one of the best in the profession, you should take the program in a top school with a name. The roster of faculty and the select students will challenge you to become thee best in the field. Yes, it is true that learning in the end will depend on the student but a big motivational factor may come from external factors such as faculty, environment, facilities, classmates and the like.
Pharmacy practice in the Philippines will ultimately expand to include administration of vaccine, participation in smoking cessation program, promotion of rational use of drugs, public health service activities and countless others. We are definitely moving towards a better professional health care practice where no pharmacist will no longer be perceived as just "tindera/tindero ng gamot".
Curriculum changes as of this writing are already in place to meet the demands of the ever-increasing complex world of health care. Specializations such as Clinical Pharmacy, HIV/AIDS Pharmacy, Intensive Care Unit Pharmacy, Oncology Pharmacy, Pediatric Pharmacy, etc are already being drafted. Normally, this will take years to materialize but at least there is hope. It is a good sign that our profession are already being recognized as a key player in the management of diseases. We are moving away from product-oriented, retail business side to patient-oriented and caring model.
Pharmacy will continuously evolve in the country and thanks to the professional regulatory authorities as well as our highly-passionate leaders in the profession who have fought to win our battles. They are our heroes in the profession and they deserve some recognition. With your help, dear young brilliant potential pharmacists and those who are already practicing pharmacist we can move together forward. Let us already prove our worth, that we are truly indispensable in health care team. Prove society our value by doing our job so well that eventually we can not be replaced by machines nor by other manpower.
