A Student’s Bittersweet Story

by: Archi Byqn

He slams the door, thrusts his fists on the wall. Force so strong it nearly broke his arm. He began to weep, his palm on his face, his shoulders shrug up and down, down and up, and tears flowed very heavily. He keeps on thinking how stupid he is to fail. Fail once again from the verdict of glory. He remorse but results can never be undone.  “How could I possibly fail, when in fact I am a brilliant, very intelligent kid?”, he keeps on asking himself. He throws whatever he sees, the pain of losing he cannot tolerate.
If only he could rewind the past and make the necessary adjustment. He should have exerted more effort for the course requirement. He could have listened more to the lectures. He could have been more serious on his studies. He could have sacrifice a little bit of his precious time to complete his assignments and review for his quizzes. He could have been more diligent as a student. But there he was: texting, facebooking, internet gaming, entertaining, love-making, flirting, etc. Clearly much of his time was wasted doing irrelevant things. He never really cared about his academic performance. Now he is paying the price; his grade a mocking failure.

He is hopeless. He is in dire pain. Failure is such a big word he can never accept. Who wants it anyway? After crying from knowing he will never pass, he begins to feel better. He can finally move on and learn from his mistake. He is now much wiser than before. He learns a very valuable lesson: to prioritize what is really necessary. To prioritize studying rather than watching yaya Dub and Alden flirt together. To prioritize doing homework than drinking and smoking weed from friends who don’t care at all. To prioritize meeting academic requirements than partying all night long. He keeps those lessons in his heart.

Four more years has pass, several occurrences tested his faith and character. Valley of death, peak of joy, frustrations and victory he all experienced. He endured a long, arduous journey. And now, here he is on the stage with his parents: to receive his Diploma for his BS degree. The joy on his parent’s faces he can never paint nor describe. His mere presence on the stage made him feel very special on that occasion. He is so thankful for the accomplishment. For all he knew there were four things that totally changed his life.

SELF-DISCIPLINE. DETERMINATION. PERSEVERANCE. FAITH.
