The University of Saint Louis Pharmacy Program: An Instructor's Note

Welcome to the best school in Cagayan Valley.  A school known to produce competent graduates as reflected by its high passing rate in various board examination. The University of Saint Louis, one of the five CICM schools, was created to provide the educational needs of the region providing a balance of intellect and Christian values. As the leading Catholic school, it continues to bear its life long mission: Wisdom builds.

The University has been here for 51 years; its Accountancy and Business Management, Nursing, Teacher Education, Engineering Program are prestigious and well-known amongst people. Recently to respond to the growing needs of the valley, it has opened courses in Medical Technology and Pharmacy.

The Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy program is a 4-year course with curriculum-design meeting CHED's mandate. Its curricular offering is so similar (not exactly the same) with Saint Louis University's BS Pharm degree. During first year major subjects include: Botany, Org/Inorg/ General Chem,  History and Orientation to Pharmacy and Pharm Care 1. General Zoology ( a 5-unit course) is not part of USL's curriculum, although there is a need to include this supposedly. In their second year professional subjects are Drug Delivery Systems and Dosage Forms, Biochem, AnaPhy, Public Health, Pharm Informatics and Calculations. In SLU, Trigonometry and Calculus are additional Math subjects but is not offered in USL.

Reaching third year is a real challenge. This year is where major subjects are fully concentrated. No time for love life, no time for family and relationships, a little time for sleep. You have to battle with so many calculations as required by Physical Pharmacy, Biopharmaceutics-Pharmacokinetics, Quality Control. Memorize a lot of scientific name of plant origin in Pharmacognosy and Plant Chemistry, microbial world of Microbiology and Parasitology. The therapeutic side of pharmacy in Pharmacology will also be a major source of stress. In fact the hardest challenge lies on this stage. Most of the time lots of students fail in this crucial year.

Congratulations, if you qualify and get promoted to your final year. That means you already meet the standard of USL and you are ready to become a full-fledge Louisian Pharmacist. The fourth and final year is not so much stressful than in the previous year. Although, full effort and hard work will still be required, not much of exertion is needed.

Congratulations to the first batch of graduates, BS Pharmacy Batch 2016 who will be taking the Pharmacist Licensure Examination. We as one Louisian community are proud of your success (insert yuor instructors here). You are one of the chosen few. We are hoping that you will make a difference in the lives of people you will be serving in the future.

NOTE: The first batch started as 2 sets (99 students) then only graduated as 1 set (36 students). The next batch (2017) are fewer with only 26 students expected to graduate next year.
Also note that the cut-off average to maintained is 83% GWA during 1st and 2nd year while 85% GWA is required for 3rd and 4th year. This is a major barrier since BS Pharmacy as a course is a REAL STRUGGLE and yet the cut-off is too high. Grade inflation is usually the result, and those who do not meet the cut-off are screen out/ kicked out of the university.
