HOW I GOT 89.30% BOARD RATING IN THE JANUARY 2014 PLE

I graduated March 2013 but then decided to postpone taking the board exam. So instead of doing it in June of the same year as most of my brilliant batch mates did, I waited for the next one. I thought the 2014 Jan PLE will be easier but boy I was wrong! I heard several second-takers who think that the previous exam is easier. Anyway despite the level of difficulty, I manage to score a whooping 89.30%, with 0.12% difference from the 10th placer from UP.

In an effort to earn potential income, immediately after graduation, I applied to several institutions. Luckily I got a non-teaching position in the University of Baguio (UB). I started working June 2013 as Laboratory Custodian with no license and with 11 K monthly starting salary. I never had the chance to enroll in a review center since I am a full-time employee.

During my tenure at UB, I find time to read and answer several mock board questions. Also I believe that my 4-year Pharmacy education at SLU, with all the diligence and hardship, has enabled me to acquire wealth of knowledge. Had I not been good during my undergrad, I probably didn't scored much. The basics and foundation of practice is thought during that 4-long years of schooling. Accumulation of stock knowledge is critical.

Here are some things I did in preparation for my boards:

  1.  Get enough sleep and rest well. The power of sleep in generating long-term memory can never be underestimated. Manage your anxiety and fear by meditating, sleeping for 6-8 hours and not compromising health.
  2. Do well in your Undergrad. I graduated with honors so I think the pressure is on. When you are academically-prepared there is no need too much worrying about taking the boards.
  3. Answer mock-board questions often. Check your answers and rationalize. Singers prepare for battle by singing, dances practice dancing, so test-takers must practice answering. Since the board exam is always multiple choice type and follows the same format as that of mock-boards, taking practice will condition you to the actual test. In answering, eliminate choices and rationalize your answer.
  4. Refresh your memory. If possible scan your notes and have essentials place in mind. You can use post-it notes on your wall to remind you of the forgotten yet essential concepts.
  5. Be consistent. When it comes to reviewing have a regular pattern, stick to a good habit. Your circadian rhythm in studying should be established. Do not just study if you feel like it, because by then you might run out of time and will soon cram when exam date is near.
  6. Pray and Play. Asking spiritual enlightenment through prayer, meditation or whatever form is helpful in controlling emotions. Fun and enjoyment should also not be erased in the equation.
While there is no one secret formula to acing the boards, putting your best foot forward will surely lead you to success. Giving your 100% best in everything should be your priority. Now, good luck to your Board Exam!
