A Short Note CSU-CM 2022

08.23.18. Freshmen orientation. 9AM-4PM/ 08.24.18. General Assembly 8:00-12:00

Excitement to unknown things, anxious of being together, noise, silence, awkward moments. What more can you expect from this orientation? Personally, I wasn’t feeling true and good to myself on this very day. Lots of emotions going on and wasn’t feeling very fresh. Although our seniors were welcoming and inviting, I wasn’t still convinced that I am finally here in this hallway at this hour. The plenary room was not overly decorated, the chairs were orderly arranged, and the air-conditioning temperature set in moderation. Keep in mind, this is Tuguegarao how hot can it get? We were introduced to some faculty; the dean had his words regarding school policies, scholarships, rules, regulations and somehow tips on surviving this rigorous training. A thorough discussion regarding rules and academic policies of the institution was facilitated by the Basic Medical Head and Secretary Dr. Bernal.

The sophomore students, on the other hand, made our day—their effort and time are appreciated. The President of the Medical Student Council thankfully did not make a lengthy speech. First-year level representatives were elected accordingly filling up the following position: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Auditor, and Bussiness Managers. Being the follower that I am, I never attempted joining any leadership role. After that, class level officers from the president down to business manager were elected. Out of three sets/blocks, only A and B had their officers in place that time. We had ours, the following week since we cannot decide who to elect. We don’t know each other yet, it would be premature to assume who possess reliable qualities fit for those position.

In the afternoon session, we had some games to strengthen our unity. First of the list is people-to-people, where a lipid bilayer of people were arranged. A song is played in the background, the inner circle rotating clockwise and the outer one counterclockwise. The emcee will mention body parts, you find a pair and make contact to those body parts. I find this game very awkward and corny. I’m too old for games, am I? But my classmates, being young and energetic, were frankly having some fun.

The next game played is Human Bingo were a 5x8 square boxes were written on a paper with qualities/ description on each box. In order to win, you have to complete the boxes by filling up the names and signature of your fellow freshmen who possess those qualities written. There were 105 freshmen admitted to the College this year, several were absent bringing down the number close to 99. So technically you have to go out and ask those 99 students whether, they “have braces”, “have tattoos”, “graduated with latin honors”, “regional/national topnotchers”, “member of choire”, “have abs”, “married”, “never had lovelife”, “obtained an NMAT score of >90”, and the lists go on. Being introverted, I had difficult time completing this tasks. It took me an hour to fill up 80% of the total boxes, still barely faring well.

The fun continues to the third game in which the details I cannot remember because I am having a selective memory loss. Let’s just call this untying the knot. And I am leaving you to fill up what happened or to imagine what could have happened. Free world, free thoughts, free imagination.
Right after the orientation and assembly, I went straight home to our province. I just want to enjoy my remaining chill days with friends and family back home.

Some thoughts on this 2-day orientation:
*The dean reiterated that seniority is non-existent in the college. Instead a fair level of respect and equal treatment is the norm.
*Our seniors were very warm and accommodating. They have treated us well.
*We are one of those universities offering quality medical education at a very low cost. For every penny that we pay, the government subsidizes 20X as much. So technically speaking, we are Iskolar ng Bayan.
*The diversity of student population at our level is optimal. People coming as far as Cavite, Rizal, Pangasinan, Benguet came here to study. I am lucky I’m a guy from Kalinga not too far from Cagayan.
*Out of 380+ applicants, only 105 students were admitted. So the best students were recruited and this is something to look forward to. This is the first time no foreign applicants were admitted. So all of us are non-aliens.
*God is bigger than my problems, so I know I can do this. We are in this together as a batch and as a class. I love the unity, the differences and the people!
